The European Equestrian Federation (EEF) held its annual General Assembly on Tuesday 7 October at the Kursaal Convention Centre in San Marino, welcoming representatives from across Europe for a highly productive and constructive meeting. Chaired by EEF President Quentin Simonet, the Assembly demonstrated the Federation’s strong commitment to progress, transparency and unity in advancing equestrian sport across the continent.
A total of 39 National Federations were present or represented out of 40, with 27 attending in person and 12 represented by proxy, reflecting the continued engagement and solidarity of EEF members.
President Simonet opened the session by warmly thanking the San Marino National Federation for its generous hospitality and for hosting a memorable gala dinner the evening before. In his opening address, he underlined the importance of collaboration and mutual support within the European equestrian community. “Our strength lies in our unity,” he said. “I am glad that we are working together to continuously reinforce our EEF, making it more reliable, balanced, and ambitious. This will strengthen our activities, support the next generations, and, more broadly, enhance the place of horses in society. Through openness and shared purpose, we will continue to move forward together.”
The Assembly approved all agenda items, including the Annual report, the Financial Reports for 2024/2025, supported by an external audit highlighting the EEF’s commitment to sound governance and accountability, as well as the budget 2025/2026. Members also endorsed the Longines EEF Series Rules for the 2026 season, ensuring the continued growth and success of Europe’s premier jumping circuit.
A key moment of the day was the election of new members to the EEF Board for the 2025–2029 term. These elections were conducted in accordance with the amended EEF Statutes, which had been approved during the Extraordinary General Assembly on Monday 6 October. The confirmation of these amendments ensured that all candidates presenting for the open positions remained eligible to stand, thereby guaranteeing a fair and transparent electoral process.
Simone Perillo (ITA) was elected 1st Vice President, bringing with him significant experience not only from his active involvement on the EEF Board, but also from his leadership roles within the Italian Equestrian Federation and European and international equestrian governance. Perillo has been a driving force behind various development initiatives and has worked closely with stakeholders to strengthen the sport’s structures at both national and continental levels.
Following his election, Perillo expressed his appreciation to the delegates, stating: “I am deeply grateful for this vote of confidence, grazie! I will work with dedication and openness to strengthen our Federation and continue promoting equestrian sport across Europe.”
Peter Cholakov (BUL) was elected 2nd Vice President. Cholakov has played an important role in promoting the growth of equestrian sport in Bulgaria and has been a strong advocate for closer collaboration between National Federations. With his experience as Vice President of the Bulgarian Equestrian Federation, father of young international riders, professional business leadership and his dedication to governance, his appointment reflects the Federation’s commitment to balanced representation and strategic growth.
Mr. Cholakov also thanked the Assembly, adding: “It is a privilege to serve with the EEF. I look forward to contributing constructive ideas and fostering cooperation among all member nations to advance our shared goals.”
Following three rounds of voting, the General Assembly elected Sandra Ruuda (SWE) as the newest member of the EEF Board. Ruuda brings extensive leadership experience through her work with the Swedish Equestrian Federation, where she has been actively involved in governance, youth development, and strategic planning. She has also played a key role in advancing national and international initiatives to strengthen the sport’s structure, support emerging talent, and foster collaboration across stakeholders. Her broad expertise and commitment to equestrian sport will be a valuable addition to the EEF Board. “I would just like to say a warm thank you from my heart,” Ruuda said. “I look forward to working with the community and thank you for the trust.”
The EEF warmly thanked all the candidates who stood for election and expressed their commitment to the Federation. Special thanks were extended to Alan Andabaka (CRO), Kostiantyn Bondariev (UKR), Jim Eyre (GBR) and Zuzana Masarykova (SVK). Although, not elected for the positions they presented for, their dedication and willingness to serve reflect the strong engagement that characterise the European equestrian community.
The Assembly also took a moment to acknowledge George Dimaras (GRE), who concluded his mandate on the EEF Board after more than a decade of dedicated service. President Simonet thanked him on behalf of the Board and the community for his long-standing commitment, constructive engagement, and significant contributions, including the creation and development of the Longines EEF Series. Dimaras received a warm round of applause from the Assembly.
“Thank you to Quentin, to the Board, and to all of you,” said Dimaras. “Thank you for these 13 years. I will continue to support the EEF, as it is in my heart. We will keep working together for our beloved equestrian sport and our beloved horses.”
In his closing remarks, President Simonet once again extended his sincere thanks to Elisa Zafferani, President of the San Marino National Federation, and staff for their outstanding organisation, warm hospitality, and smooth coordination of the event.
“These have been two very full and inspiring days,” said Simonet. “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank you all for your strong contribution to the 2025 General Assembly. Thank you to the EEF staff for their excellent preparation, to the scrutineers for their careful work, and to all delegates for your active participation.”
“One of our key goals is to involve more people in shaping the future of our Federation. I want to reaffirm my commitment to working with all the candidates from this election, whether on working groups or through other initiatives. Your engagement is essential, and you have our full commitment in return.”
The 2025 EEF General Assembly concluded with optimism and a renewed sense of purpose, marking another important step forward for the Federation and its member nations. Looking ahead, the Irish National Federation will host next year’s General Assembly in Dublin (IRL), reaffirming the continued enthusiasm and shared vision of the sport across Europe.
The EEF Board now comprises President Quentin Simonet (FRA), 1st Vice President Simone Perillo (ITA), 2nd Vice President Peter Cholakov (BUL), and Members Nayla Stössel (SUI), Soenke Lauterbach (GER), Klaus Roeser (GER), Elisabeth Max-Theurer (AUT), Alan Andabaka (CRO), and Sandra Ruuda (SWE).
